Character Info
Name: Lawrence Catigern
Race: Magical Human
Sex: Male
Age: 24
Faction: None, dislikes both sides as much as the other
Power: Telekinesis
Law can use kinetic energy to manipulate physical objects as he sees fit in a variety of ways. His skill level is not that of a Master's but cannot be called Novice-level either. The weight of the objects that he can currently control goes up to around the weight of a car, but the more the object weighs the less control over them he has. For example, while he can move a pebble at high speeds elegantly he can only move a boulder a few feet in some general direction. At the same time he can use his power on multiple objects at once, but using more objects at one time has the same effect as if he was using a heavier object. If he uses his Telekinesis repeatedly over time he eventually starts to lose strength, the more effort he puts into using it (typically by using heavier objects) the shorter time he has, until eventually he starts getting powerful headaches and needs to rest. He's not learned enough with his Telekinesis to be able to such precise movements as picking locks or moving organs within another person, he's tried it before and it did not quite go well for him.
His "signature move", as he insists on calling it, is sending pens and pencils that he keeps on his person at whatever he chooses at supersonic speed, turning the mundane and generally harmless essentially into bullets. In fact he seems to make a point out of using oddball objects when it would be just as good, or even better, to use something more suited to the purpose he wants them for simply because he feels like it.
Along with this Law has been learning how to hover himself with his Telekinesis. Hovering has the benefits of being able to move him faster and in ways using his feet simply would not allow him, but again it becomes harder to use when he tries to use his power in other ways at the same time. Typically he can't hover himself over ten feet above the ground, but he can slow himself down from a fall higher then that, and can only keep hovering for around five minutes at a time.
Rune or code: N/A
Appearance: Lawrence stands at a height of 5'10" with long, unkempt and messy black hair that reaches down to touch his shoulders and often covers his light blue eyes if he doesn't move it out of the way. Despite not being especially tall people often call him 'lanky' due to how thin he is, which he attributes to being a mix of his faster-than-average metabolism and sometimes skipping one meal a day. Typically breakfast. Law doesn't like breakfast.
In terms of clothing Law often wears a white long-sleeved shirt along with a black pair of trousers, found most of the time to be wearing brown boots and a blue beanie hat. He often wears a long dark red raincoat with several compartments wherein he hides whatever he's carrying around with him at the time, typically several pens and pencils along with a journal and a sketchbook with which to use them on. He often carries himself rather lazily, often even opting not to bother walking and simply hovering himself where he wants to go while he puts his feet up and relaxes. Strangely enough while he often wears his raincoat he doesn't often bother to close it or put the hood up when it rains, which he says is because he likes the feel of the rain.
Personality: Law is a... Peculiar fellow, to be sure. He does things entirely according to his own whims, however he feels like at the time, regardless as whether or not it'll help his own situation or make it ten times worse. As it stands, his whims tend to be to laze around and do things that other people would consider to be somewhat peculiar by typical standards for no other given reason then that he feels like it. People would call him 'silly' in his actions if he didn't constantly have a cool, somewhat serious look on his face at all times.
He seems to be apathetic toward most things, up to and including the 'disagreements' between New Magic and Old Magic. Law says only cares about it whenever it directly involved him, which doesn't happen to be much given his nature to not get involved in many things. This includes other people who, while he certainly talks to and interacts with them, he never bothers to pursue any relationship with beyond mere acquaintances. He doesn't like getting attached, and by extension never stays in one place for too long.
However despite apparent apathy Law just so happens to do things that hint that, perhaps, he's not quite uncaring as he seems. He's "accidentally" gotten involved with other people's problems, helping them while insisting that it was only incidental to him helping himself. Many a time he's expresses a dislike of both sides, both Old and New Magic, especially when they drag non-magical humans into their affairs... All this while keeping a tranquil, cool and apathetic look upon his face.
Law also seems to note down anything interesting he sees, sometimes even drawing sketches of things if he wants to. Whenever people ask him about it he says it's because he's "writing a book" and that it's for "inspiration", but the mere fact that he actually gives a reason makes people assume that it isn't the case. However, he is entirely truthful in this matter... Though he hasn't actually gotten down to writing anything yet, merely entries of things that he's seen and ideas that he may follow.
Strengths: Unpredictable, imaginative, insightful, good-hearted
Weaknesses: Impossible to work with, lazy, fails to apply himself, physically weak, unsociable, disorganized
Biography: Lawrence Catigern was born of an ESPer Father and a non-magical Mother, his Father having once been in a previous relationship that went 'sour' after they had arrived in the new world. He had never told Law the details of whatever happened, only that he had a Half-Sister somewhere out there in the world. Law never cared for it, believing that if he were to ever meet his half-sister they would most likely be so different that they wouldn't get along.
Growing up Law was taught the very basics of how to use his Telekinesis by his Father in private, as he wanted to keep his nature as secret as he feared that his family would be persecuted if it was ever found out. As such Law grew up primarily as a non-magical human, only using his Telekinetic powers within the privacy of his new home. Whenever the young Law had asked his Father about life before he was always ignored, or sometimes even shouted at... Eventually he took the hint and stopped asking, understanding that his Father was ashamed of whatever things he had done in the past.
Growing up Law had always been somewhat of an optimist, mostly due to the influence of his Mother. "There's good in everyone," she would always say, "No one's truly 'evil'." Whenever he felt upset, or angry, or hateful she would always know how to talk to him and calm him down. His optimism became the basis for much of his identity, the main thing anyone who knew him identified him by. Law wanted to help people, he liked helping people. He even got into trouble helping people sometimes.
One day he got into too much trouble.
It had been a day just like any other, he was Seventeen years old and coming back from another day at Sixth Form when he saw a fight going on. As usual he got himself involved, only hesitating when he realized that it wasn't jut any typical fight. It was between ESPers and Elementals, magic being thrown between the two Magic Users and people running in fear. Law couldn't just let it happen, not when people were around that could get hurt over something they had nothing to do with. So he got involved despite not knowing anything about what was going on, because it felt right.
At first he had intended not to use his powers himself, but when he saw how full-on they were going out on each other he had no choice but to use his Telekinesis. He wasn't as skilled as either of them, but with a mixture of his ingenuity and the element of surprise he managed to subdue the ESPer. All that was left was himself and the Elemental, who at first wanted to finish off the ESPer until Law stopped him. The two stared in a standstill, neither wanting to fight as they were both exhausted, until the sound of sirens caused them both to flee.
Lawrence didn't fully think about his actions until he had gotten home. There was a reason his Father had wanted to keep his powers a secret, and now everyone he knew and more would know within the week. However, the trouble didn't come from them like he had initially expected. It came from the factions, both of which were incredibly angered by his actions. It turned out that the ESPer that he had subdued was an important member of his faction, and had identified him as a traitor while the Elemental that was hired to kill the ESPer identified Law as stopping him from killing the ESPer. Both sides wanted him, both sides tracked him down to his home, resulting in him and his family having to run away.
Scared by all that had happened and thinking that he had was putting his family in danger Lawrence ran away from his parents, hoping to take their attention away from them and onto himself. It worked, but it presented a new problem... How the hell was a mostly untrained seventeen year old going to protect himself from at least two highly trained adults that were probably after his throat? He couldn't run forever, this much he knew... But there was nothing he could do.
He kept running, every so often coming close to death by the hands of one of them but always managing to somehow outsmart them and get away. He stole food and money to live, broke into abandoned homes to sleep, hitchhiked from place to place and spent every free moment he had training himself how to use his powers. Law knew his days were numbered, his optimism only carrying him so far, until one day he got lucky.
It had been a random encounter. Law broke into what appeared to be an abandoned home when he found an old man there, whom he immediately attack as he feared him to be one of his hunters. At first he was scared he was going to hurt him only to be surprised when the old man showed to have his own Telekinetic powers, stopping the force of Law's own attack and sending it back at him. The teenager raised his hands and apologized, explaining his story to the old man...
... Who surprised him by offering to train him. It turned out the old man had once been a fighter for the New Magic Faction, only to grow disillusioned after they had taken the portal into the new world and ended up immediately at the throats of the Old Magic Faction. The old man had thought it to be a new start, but instead they just dragged their conflict into another realm and continued it on. He felt for Law, so he trained him and said he would defend him if his hunters found them. The old man was odd company, which had a major effect on the still young Law, but was welcome company in what had been a horrible time.
A month had passed with Law training under the old man, and already he had improved incredibly. While he certainly wasn't a Master he was on his way to being as competent as most other Telekinetics, perhaps even better then average. Eventually his hunters arrived, and together they drove them off day after day. They kept coming back, not wanting to give up, and it slowly dawned on the two that if Law was ever going to truly escape they would have to kill them both. Not wanting Law to have that weight on his shoulders, the old man decided that he would kill them in their next encounter.
The encounter came, but it did not go as planned. The ESPer and Elemental had apparently both decided to team up in order to complete their mission, making them twice as dangerous. Law and the old man fought hard, eventually cornering the ESPer and killing him. However it turned out that this was what the Elemental planned, and as soon as the old man was done he attack. Driven by his anger and not wanting to lose the old man, Law attacked. He slammed the Elemental to the wall and strangled him with his bare hands until he his neck snapped.
Law was, understandably, distraught. Even though the old man told him that he was fully justified in what he did he felt guilt for taking another person's life, it being completely against his nature in every way. He could never go back to his old life again, he had changed too much, and opted to live with the old man. The two lived together, him training Law even further, till eventually the old man died of natural causes. Now alone, Law went out into the wide world without knowing his purpose.
Town to town, city to city, country to country... He just kept going. He tried not to care, to not get involved, knowing that it only would lead to his own misery, but he couldn't help it. He always got reluctantly involved, making up excuses that were as much for himself as they were for other people. Law eventually decided to write a book, to make that his purpose. He would see the world, see all it had to offer, and write it down. Maybe it could inspire him. It served for a good excuse to get involved at the very least, he could always say that he got involved because he thought that getting involved in the situation would inspire him.
