Character InfoName: Irving McKaul
Race: Non-magical human
Sex: Male
Age: 45
Faction: New Magic
Power: Irving has no magic whatsoever and don’t believe him if he tells you otherwise.
Rune or code: None yet
Appearance: Unkempt is the first word that most think of when they look at Irving. His beard is oily with the occasional white hairs sticking out from the sea of black. His face is littered with small scars from popped acne that still plagues the man even though he’s in his forties. He has a small mole on his right cheek, near his jawline. Irving’s hair is shaggy and often swept off to one side of his face and although this hairstyle looks decent on teenaged boys, on him it just illuminates Irving receding hairline. The only parts of Irving that are described as “attractive” are his blue eyes and his smile. And despite being someone who is always the butt of some kind of joke, Irving smiles a lot.
Irving owns little clothing. He has a few pairs of baggy jeans, his old mental hospital gown, and his current blue janitorial uniform. More often than not, Irving will be wearing his work uniform that’s complete with a questionably dirty rag hanging out the back pocket and a large set of jangling keys hooked to his belt buckle. His shoes are a commonplace black work shoe that are scuffed everywhere. They also squeak when he walks, giving his location away almost all of the time.
He’s built like a thin rod that bends over at every gust of wind. Irving, when standing straight (which is never) is a little below seven foot.
Personality: Irving has a strong belief that he has magical powers despite the fact that he comes from an entirely mundane human family and was already fifteen years old when the rift opened on Earth. Almost everyone who knows Irving now never tells him otherwise, at least not to his face, because then they’ll be locked into a fifty-five minute rant that he
does have powers and the other person isn’t strong enough to see them. Usually a cheerful fellow, this is the only time Irving will become aggressive and hostile to defend his “powers”.
Irving has a love of bad puns and will offer one up whenever he as the opportunity. He’s also quite the chatterbox and will drone on and on about a single topic, his view on them, until someone stops him or gives him a job to do. He’s very hard working and takes pride in keeping the skyscraper in tip top shape. Irving is mainly found in the lower area of the skyscraper and doesn’t work in the living areas after he was found snooping through people’s stuff.
Because Irving was pulled out of school very early, he is not that bright and speaks and thinks in a manner that reflects this.
Strengths: Loyal, doesn’t ask questions, dogmatic, cheerful, and a hard worker.
Weaknesses: Doesn’t ask questions, a bit of a sheep, non-magical, and gets easily riled up by those who don’t believe he’s magical.
Biography: There was always something odd about Irving McKaul. Years before the rift open, spilling magical humans into the world, Irving always swore he had powers to anyone who would listen. His parents, immigrants to the country, swore there was nothing different with their child even when teachers would pin notes of misconduct onto Irving’s jacket. His mother, Louise, would cry when neighboring children mocked their family and his father, Rickard, locked himself into his studies whenever the notes appeared. Irving’s four other siblings didn’t want anything to do with the weirdo and often agreed Irving was adopted. None of this bothered Irving. He went on swearing about his abilities with a naive blindness, ignorant to the destruction he was causing to his own family.
Eventually, when Irving was ten, his father died in the factory he worked at. The factory was at fault, treating immigrants with less than satisfactory safety precautions, and hushed up the McKaul family from suing by offering a large amount of money. Irving’s siblings saw it as bloody money, Irving’s mother saw it as a way to sustain her children, and Irving swore he saw his father’s death a week before it happened. He saw it in a vision.
Louise eventually had enough of her wayward son’s antics and, using the money from her husband’s death, sent Irving to a mental institute. The rest of the family welcomed this sendoff and Irving, now eleven, promised that he had read his mother’s mind and agreed with her wholeheartedly. And despite being pulled away from school, being laughed at in the mental institute, and not seeing his family again, Irving meet it all with a knowing smile.
Four years later the rift opened and Irving’s ravings became a reality. With magic now in the world it only took another three years before the mental institute chucked Irving out on the doorsteps of the Skyscraper. If the boy said he had magical powers then that’s where he belonged.
Well, right away the ESP’s knew Irving had no abilities at all but the eighteen year old was stupidly loyal. Some laughed at him, others pitied him, but most just ignored the mundane human. When asked why they kept Irving around in the Skyscraper, one high ranking ESP just shrugged and said:
We’ll need a janitor. So, for the last twenty-seven years, Irving has been working in the Skyscraper cleaning and doing basic repairing. Most of the younger ESP’s who were born and raised in the Skyscraper know Irving well. Now whether they appreciate his loyalty to the cause or think he’s a dirty human is unbeknownst to Irving. They often pull pranks on him but each and every day Irving greats it all with a smile…and a promise he’ll help win the war with his powers.
Other: Irving really doesn’t have any magical powers or a code.
