Espionage is Totally Not My Thing

Tabitha jerked her head in a nod as the ESP whispered last minute clarifications. She eyed the agent steadily, determined not to give away too much of herself to the non-magical. The water Elemental didn't even register Lynx's joke as she composed herself, sitting just a little taller as Atkinson approached.
"Agent Atkinson," she greeted, tugging the glass of water closer to her body, "if we could just get down to business."
Pulling out a free chair, the older man sat down, sitting stiffly even compared to Tabitha. "As I told Mr. McPhearson," Atkinson said, shooting Lynx another wary glance, "all we want is information."
The unspoken 'for now' hung heavy in the air.
Tabitha took a sip from her water, buying herself time to think. "What sort of information, Mr. Atkinson? As you know this is very dangerous water we're treading in."
The agent nodded his thick neck, waving the comment away with his hand. "I understand that, Tabitha, I do, but what you," he turned to look and Lynx, "and Mr. McPhearson here must understand is that Earth is not your world. The American people have been very accommodating throughout these last thirty years and now we are asking for only one thing in return: information."
"Anything about the war, what both sides are doing or planning, data like that would be greatly appreciated," Atkinson continued, "with that being said, it's been a while since we last talked, Mr. McPhearson, perhaps you could tell us anything you've seen? That might help Tabitha understand what we want."

Lynx monitored the exchange between the FBI Agent and the Water Elemental with a cautiously neutral expression, his eyes flicking back and forth between the two as they chatted. It was by far one of the stiffest, most uncomfortable conversations Lynx had been a part of, and under other circumstances he might have insisted on a round of Irish Car Bombs to break up the ice. However, he figured Atkinson probably wasn't the type of Agent to drink, especially on the job.
When conversation turned to him, his expression softened into a pleasant sort of smirk full of his usual sarcastic charm. "Sure, Dougie," he replied. "Let me think here. So, Jayne over there has got herself a new server- Asian chick, smokin' hot."
Atkinson looked torn between annoyance and confusion. "Does she have any magical powers?"
Lynx's expression furrowed. "I dunno, man, that's rude to ask. Like asking how old a girl is. Am I right?" he glanced at Tabitha as though looking for her to affirm this notion, so he missed the somewhat strained look that crossed the FBI Agent's face. "But I can tell you she's over 18, because Jayne only hires people 18 and up." He jabbed an index finger at Atkinson for emphasis as though he had prevented the agent from insinuating anything inappropriate.
"Mr. McPhearson," Atkinson began in pleasant voice, "allow me clarify the question for you. Have you seen anything between your faction and Tabitha's that might be of interest to the United States' government?" A wan smile forced its way onto his lips as he waited for Lynx's answer.
"Allow me to clarify my answer for you," Lynx began tautly, "I keep out of that shit for a reason, Dougie, so unless you want to be specific about what you want, hot chicks, old cars, and the best beer is about as helpful as I can be for you." He lifted his pint glass as though to make a toast and then took a hearty swig.
"Why do you keep out of it?" Atkinson asked, unabashed.
"Because I don't give a shit about old grudges."
"Old grudges?"
"Yeah. Thirty years ago when we first came here, there was supposed to be peace. One side betrayed the other, everyone blames everyone else, yadda yadda yadda."
"And that's why you all fight?" Atkinson pressed, looking intrigued. Lynx didn't immediately reply, as it dawned on him that he was cooperating more than he had intended. "So why do you two work together, then?"
"I'm a sucker for brunettes," Lynx rejoined slyly.
"Uh huh.." Atkinson turned his shrewd gaze back to the water Elemental. "Tabitha, what do you think about the war?"

Just to annoy the agent, Tabitha nodded her head when Lynx looked over at her for confirmation. Oh yes, asking a woman what her powers are is very taboo. Personally, Tabitha couldn't help answer the question either- though not with details at least. She had never seen the Asian woman, so chances are if the woman did have powers, they weren't Old Magic or at least she wasn't someone from the Castle. Elementals didn't spy on each other like the ESP did, but they were a close knit family and most people knew each other.
The tension between Lynx and Atkinson was palpable as their conversation continued. Tabitha was not one for confrontation, she preferred going with the flow, and she shifted in her chair uncomfortably. The water Elemental frowned at how much detail Lynx was giving to Atkinson about their kind's past. It was no new news to any magical person, and even some non-magicals, their reason for fighting, but still...the way Atkinson had leaned in, eyes eager, it made Tabitha wary why the FBI didn't know this information already.
"Stuey," Tabitha pressed, giving Lynx a good kick underneath the table, "I think you've said enough on that matter."
Her face flushed a little at Lynx's comment, which worked well when Tabitha shyly said, "My reasons for working with Stuey?" the teacher smiled coyly, "I think you non-magicals have a story here on Earth. Romeo and Juliet? That might answer your question." She peaked a glance over at Lynx, happy for once about her blushing. She was acting just like Alyssa first had around the ESP. Tabitha hoped Lynx wouldn't blow their cover as forbidden lovers and hopefully Atkinson would buy it.
The agent squirmed a bit in his seat, clearly aware of what implications Tabitha had meant. "Ah, well, all the best," he said, coughing awkwardly, "but the war, Tabitha, what do you think about the war?"
"It's dangerous," she said thrumming her fingers against the tabletop, "as all wars all."
"So you want peace then?"
Tabitha gave a weak smile. "Who doesn't?"
A flash of irritation passed through Atkinson's demeanor as he continued to press Tabitha.
"Tabitha, you do realize that by working with the FBI we can provide you and Mr. McPhearson with protection. If word gets out about your involvement with each other..." Atkinson trailed off, leaving the consequences open on the table for all to see.

When Tabitha gave him a swift "shut up" kick under the table, Lynx pressed his lips together and shot her a briefly annoyed look. That expression rapidly changed to shock as Tabitha played up a romance between them, though he hastily covered his bewilderment with what he hoped was a convincing grin to Atkinson. Romeo and Juliet? Really? Lynx was almost embarrassed, even if the undercover lover story WAS a cover up. He nearly snorted with laughter, however, when he saw how uncomfortable Atkinson was.
Tabitha's obnoxiously vague answers were complemented with Lynx's infuriating smirk, and when Atkinson offered his hidden threat, Lynx simply replied, "That's so sweet of you, Dougie. We'll make sure to put you on our wedding invite list."
Atkinson pressed his lips to together, surveying Lynx with meticulous calculation. "What do you know of the fanatical anti-war movement, the so-called 'Crusaders for Life'?" he asked, dark eyes boring into Lynx's bright blue ones. Lynx was vaguely uncomfortable under the intensity of the stare, but he didn't let it show. He simply shrugged in response.
"That they are anti-war," he answered unhelpfully.
"What do you know about the recent attack on the local pharmacy?"
This question was met with silence, and Atkinson took advantage of the moment to reach for his briefcase, pulling out a manila folder and opening it to reveal a series of pictures. "You're lucky I have control of this case, or you would have been arrested immediately," Atkinson continued, sliding the enlarged, somewhat grainy photos onto the table for Lynx and Tabitha to view. Despite their poor quality, the pictures clearly displayed Lynx and Tabitha during various stages of the attack. One was of Tabitha pressed against the wall before Marcus' head had exploded, and one was of Lynx and a blood-soaked Tabitha helping that unconscious teen towards the back.
"Funny for an ESP to forget about security cameras," Atkinson finished delicately as Lynx and Tabitha reviewed the photos, some clearer than others. "What were you doing in the Pharmacy? Not a very romantic place for lovers to meet." Another brief pause before Atkinson added in an extremely cautious tone, "I suggest you start answering my questions. I can't help you if you don't help me."

Disliking the agent for making his veiled threats against her, Lynx, and her people, Tabitha couldn't help but join in with Lynx's juvenile teasing. "Maybe you could help us with the flowers, Mr. Atkinson? I want lilies but Stuey here is just a true romantic and wants roses. We have some time, of course, well, maybe not seeing how you suggest our lives could be at danger." Tabitha's voice hardened at the end, proving she too could play that game. The teacher turned her head to look at Lynx, "If I let you go with roses, I'm picking napkins."
Atkinson's pudgy face twisted in annoyance before he composed himself. "Tabitha, from what I know you are suppose to be the reasonable one. So, if you would please," he tapped on the file, "take a look at these."
Tabitha's swamp colored eyes scanned over the pictures, giving an involuntary shudder as she saw the fuzzy shape of Markus. The woman would never forget the man's eyes or how it felt to have him digging around in her brain, reading her pathetically filtered thoughts. For a while, after the attack, Tabitha had a hard time sleeping. She saw those eyes and then blood. Lots of blood.
"I was sick," the Elemental explained, shoving the picture of Markus away from her, "I was suppose to pick up medicine from the pharmacy and meet Stu somewhere else. When I didn't show up he got worried and ended up in that mess as well."
"That's all we know about the pharmacy and the Fanatics," Tabitha stated.
"How caring of you, Mr. McPhearson," Atkinson sucked on his tongue, making a clucking noise as he shook his head. "But for some reason, however, I don't believe that story. To make things easier, we can start with simpler questions. For example, this kid," the agent pulled out a closeup of the teenager's face, contorted with anger. It was shortly before the kid had blown off Markus' face.
"Who is he? From these pictures we can tell that he is a very powerful individual. An ESP, am I correct?" the agent looked to Lynx, smiling politely, "From what we gather he looks to be someone with a Mind Blast ability. Or at least, that's what we've heard that specific power called."
Tabitha frowned. She supposed that if the FBI only had pictures and witness accounts, they would suspect that the teenager was a Mind Blaster like Reynah...but that wasn't true. Tabitha couldn't be sure, her magic wasn't the same as the kid's, but she was certain he wasn't a Mind Blaster. Lynx would know, but would he tell?
"Come now, I've made the questions easier," Atkinson said, tapping the picture again, waiting for a response.

Lynx had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing as Tabitha taunted the FBI agent with a level of skill Lynx would not have expected from the typically straight-laced, respectful teacher. He must be rubbing off on her. However, the humor was sucked from the room as Atkinson focused their attention on the photos. Tabitha's story was plausible, and Lynx couldn't help but retort to Atkinson's sarcasm with a cheerful, "What can I say, I'm just a caring guy."
But, of course, Atkinson did not believe the story. When he pointed out the picture of the kid, Lynx leaned over to look and then shrugged when the agent asked who he was. It was, to be fair, the truth; Lynx had no idea who the kid was. However, as Atkinson continued, Lynx realized he was now facing a rather bizarre dilemma. He had no loyalty to the ESP side, and yet he was not entirely willing to spill all their secrets. Still, Lynx had to look out for himself, and if was going to come down between the ESP and his own skin? Well, we all know who he was going to choose.
"He's a telekinetic," Lynx corrected, and Atkinson actually looked surprised (probably more by Lynx's helpfulness than the correction). "I don't know him, though. We're not like the Borg, all interconnected and shit."
"Aren't you a telekinetic?" Atkinson asked with avid curiosity, either missing the Star Trek reference or not caring about it. Lynx shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"No," he answered. Then, as though realizing that the government probably already knew his powers, he qualified, "Not like that."
"Hmmmm," Atkinson hummed thoughtfully. "If you don't know him, why did you save him? He's clearly dangerous."
Lynx chose not to answer, instead glancing at Tabitha so she could take the reins on this one. While Lynx did not care about the ESP faction, or the Elemental faction, he did have the decency to care about Tabitha, and he didn't want to say anything to compromise her. Ideally, they would be able to give the FBI enough information to keep them at bay, but not enough to give them any sort of advantage. It was a tricky line to dance, and Lynx had never had great balance.

"How could we leave him? He's a child!" Tabitha said, the water in her glass bubbling as it reacted to her emotions. The movement did not go unnoticed by Atkinson as he pulled out a pad and pen, jotting something down before turning back to look at Tabitha expectantly.
Suddenly, Tabitha felt very, very, unsafe. "What did you write?" she demanded, peering over at the paper.
"Notes," the agent replied, his answers as vaguely cryptic as Lynx's. The non-magical almost looked smug as he popped the lid back on the pen, "I'll have to write a report, you must understand that."
"About me?" worriedly, Tabitha turned to Lynx, "About us?"
"About everything, Tabitha. This is all for the safety of the American people," Atkinson's dark eyebrows raised high, "and that includes you."
If the FBI found out more about her then they could use it track her down, the Committee would know and her secrets would be revealed. Tabitha shook her head, pointing at the paper. "No, don't write anything down about us. We can help you, but you don't write anything about me or Stu."
Atkinson placed his hand over the paper, smiling at them coolly. "If you help me, Tabitha, then I will help you and these notes can be all yours."
Frowning, Tabitha looked over to Lynx before sighing heavily. "We rescued the kid because he was knocked out and there were two Fanatics unaccounted for that would have killed him otherwise. I didn't want innocent blood on my hands."
Now it was the agent's turn to frown as he flipped through his notepad. "Two Fanatics? We know about the blue haired man who ran out. His name was Patrick," Atkinson shuffled through the photos to show one of Tabitha trying to drown him, "Who did we miss?"

As the water in the glass began to bubble, Lynx pressed one of his feet against Tabitha's leg- not a kick, just enough pressure to be a sort of warning. They didn't need to be "showing off" around this guy, and as Lynx watched Atkinson jot something down on a notepad he frowned. Tabitha's reaction seemed to suggest she was surprised by this, but Lynx was not; he had no doubt the FBI wanted information, but it wasn't like they were looking to produce a Nat Geo special on Magic people. No, Lynx had a feeling they wanted to know how magic people ticked, what made them special, what they were capable of. His mind even wandered far enough to toy with the idea of secret labs where secret tests were run on ESP and Elementals who had been kidnapped...
He snapped out of this thought trail as Atkinson coolly offered them a "compromise." Lips pressed together in disbelief, Lynx exchanged a look with Tabitha before she explained why they had rescued the kid. Atkinson seemed put off by her explanation, and after flipping through his notes he explained why.
"This guy," Lynx answered, pushing some pictures aside and pointing to a shot of Lewis wrestling with Asher.
"That is your associate, isn't it?" Atkinson asked, face puckered in a pensive expression.
"Yes," Lynx answered truthfully, not seeing any reason to lie. "He was distracting this guy so I could help Tabitha." More honesty. In fact... "Look, I don't know exactly what you want from us. Truthfully, it was a wrong place, wrong time scenario. None of us wanted to be there."
Looking absorbed in his thoughts, Atkinson didn't immediately answer. He shifted through the photos, pulling the ones with the blonde haired young man in them. When he was finished and he finally decided to speak, it was almost as though he hadn't heard Lynx at all. "What are his powers?"
"What?"
"His powers," Atkinson repeated, tapping one of the photographs and looking up at Lynx and Tabitha. "There's no photos of him using his powers, none that I noticed."
Lynx didn't immediately answer because he wasn't sure he wanted to divulge any more information. Of course the psychic weapons wouldn't show up on a photograph, and from what "evidence" they had, it only looked like the Psychic Weapons kid was throwing punches. Lynx could have explained this, but he felt this would only bring up more questions. Atkinson seemed to sense Lynx's willingness to talk was waning, so he hastily wrote something down on his notepad and moved on.
"How do you feel about these Crusaders for Life?" Atkinson asked, looking back and forth between Tabitha and Lynx. "You must realize they are giving you a bad rep."

She didn't need Lynx's warning, Tabitha was full aware how stupid it had been to have the water react to her emotions. Sometimes that was the hardest part about her strong connection to her element- the water around her reacted on its own accord; it felt her tension and responded. That was another big divide between Old and New Magic. The nature based abilities had a life of their own, while, at least to Tabitha's knowledge, that wasn't the case with ESP powers.
"All of us were there at the wrong place at the wrong time," Tabitha concurred. Her mind went back to the civilian man who'd been poisoned. The teacher didn't know if that man had lived.
As the conversation continued, Tabitha reached for her drink, swallowing the water down. If she could empty the glass normally then it wouldn't react if Atkinson brought up anything else that bothered her. Tabitha was thankful that Lynx didn't explain the Psychic Weapons to Atkinson- some magical secrets were best kept to its owners. What if there came a time when the non-magicals turned on both Elementals and ESP's? It was unlikely, but Tabitha knew it could always be a possibility, just like the ESP's could always betray them.
"There are non-magicals working for them as well, Mr. Atkinson, you must realize that too?" the woman questioned, "The Crusaders for Life is a terrorist organization, yes? How do you think we feel about them?"
Atkinson sighed, "I understand that, I do. But you are avoiding the question I asked, Tabitha. Do you believe in their goals?"
"In peace?" Tabitha gave a forced laugh, "Who wouldn't want peace? We have people dying on all sides but some things are worth fighting for."
"So you believe in the war?" the agent questioned, his eyebrows arching high. He scribbled something down into his notebook. "How...unexpected."
Tabitha's face reddened. "That's not what I meant."
"You didn't give me an outright answer about your feelings on the fanatics, you said the war is worth fighting for, it seems to me Tabitha that those statements could lead to serious ramifications."
"I do not work for the terrorists!" Tabitha snapped back, "There are things about our cultures you can't understand that put me in a tricky situation."
"What things, Tabitha? Help me to understand, that's why I'm here."
Tabitha gave a defeated look over at Lynx, silently sending him a 'help me out of this mess' signal through her eyes. Lynx could talk circles around a person any day and she needed to get Atkinson off of her personal life.

The implications Atkinson was making did not set well with Lynx, and the look on his face grew darker and darker as the Agent questioned Tabitha. When she looked over to him for help, Lynx sighed and leaned forward, fixing Atkinson with a hard stare.
"Look, the Elementals are traditionalists, and they don't trust 'new' or 'foreign'. Tabitha cares about her people, which is why she wants the war to stop. She's not running around killing innocent people. She's a teacher, for chrissake."
"And what do you want, then?" Atkinson inquired with an equally hard stare. Lynx flashed a sarcastic smile.
"To be left alone. By you, by the ESP, by the Elementals, by everyone," he responded, adding, "except my dearly beloved here, of course."
Atkinson leaned back in his chair, surveying Lynx critically. "Be realistic, Mr. McPhearson. You are part of an issue that needs to be resolved for the safety of everyone- nonmagical people, Elementals, and ESP. We do not want any secret war waging on American soil, not with innocent lives at stake. This fanatical backlash has already caused damage here and in other places, and while nonmagical people might be involved, it is those with magic who are receiving the blame." He looked at Tabitha, studying her for a moment before continuing. "It needs to be stopped."
"What, you want us to fly in with our super powers and save the day?" Lynx asked sarcastically.
"No, but I want you to gather as much intel about them as you can so we can end their terrorism. And should the need arise? Prevent their actions. Tabitha, I want you to keep your people in check. The ESP have opened their doors for us, Kenji Jianyu himself keeps regular communication with us. The Elementals, however, have been harder to get in touch with. It makes them...more suspicious, I'm sure you must understand..."
Lynx wondered if Atkinson and the FBI knew that Kenji was certainly not showing them everything, probably not even close, but he didn't bring it up. It would be good if Kenji could keep the nonmagics happy and accepting, or at least it would mean less problems for Lynx.
"How do I stay in touch with you, Tabitha?" Atkinson pressed. "I'm sure you don't want me traipsing into the forest calling your name?" He smiled with cool civility as he awaited her answer.

"Keep my people in check?" Tabitha said, giving the man an incredulous look, "we are a private people, Mr. Atkinson and our ways are not your ways." The teacher sighed heavily, seemingly taxed by the conversation. There was no way she could bring this information to the War Committee. The Head Chair, Marion Steel, was frantic for action lately and having the FBI poking their heads around would only exasperate things.
"No, but it's not that easy," she fidgeted, "there is someone else though, one of our diplomats, who spends most of her time in Coho."
Tabitha chewed on the inside of her lip, a nervous habit she had only started back up again recently. Should she involve Gwyn into this whole mess as well? It made sense- Gwyn could be trusted, she would be able to slip between the Castle and Coho without fuss, and she could deal with strangers a whole lot better than Tabitha ever could.
"I need to talk with her first, but she could serve as a smarter liaison than myself. As Lynx said, I'm just a teacher."
She couldn't tell how Atkinson felt about this as he wrote down more notes, nodding his head now and again. "Very well, that could be suitable, but when can I met your diplomat and yourself again?"
Drawing back to her undercover story with Lynx, Tabitha gave the agent a sad smile. "Unfortunately, I'll have to stay out of Mapleport and Coho for a while...there's been some suspicion about why I've been going down to much. And if they ever found out about Stu," she turned her gaze over at the ESP, "I'm afraid of what would happen to him."
"That being said," Tabitha continued, "I will give my friend your card and she will arrange something."

It looked for a moment like Atkinson might argue, but then he glanced at Lynx, wrote one last thing on his notepad, and began gathering his things. "Very well, then, I look forward to hearing from your friend. Soon." He left no room for Tabitha to argue whether or not her friend would want to be involved. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Tabitha. Stuart, I'm sure I'll see you around."
Offering them one last bland smile, Atkinson put everything back into his briefcase and stood up to leave. "I would like to stress upon both of you that I'm working to keep peace, here. I recommend both of you cooperate if you don't want your people- both of your people- taken over by Special Forces. I don't want that, but trust me when I say it has already been suggested by some." And on that note, Atkinson bid them good day and strolled out of the pub, leaving Lynx and Tabitha alone.
"Well, ain't he a ray of sunshine," Lynx muttered after the agent had left. He sighed, dragging a hand down his face as he turned to look at Tabitha. "Who is this friend of yours? Darling?" The term of endearment was said with much sarcasm, and the faint traces of a smirk twitched at the corners of his mouth

Atkinson may have been doing his job just like any other person, and Tabitha could not fault the agent for that, but did he have to be so condensing? He would hound Lynx and Tabitha till he got his information and he would do it all the while with that smug smile. Tabitha was glad to see him leave, taking with him his photos and notes.
The teacher grinned at Lynx's nickname, noticing how much emphasis he had placed on the word. "She's my bestfriend and the only other person I would trust with all of this. Actually, Gwyn was the one who warned me about the FBI and War Committee's suspicion. She knows about you, about everything, but only because she noticed something was wrong and had that intel on me."
"And don't worry, you're safe with her knowing as well. Like I told Atkinson, Gwyn is one of our best diplomats and is one of the rare Elementals who actually likes the city." Tabitha frowned. "Maybe you know her? She spends a lot of time here."
Tabitha went on to describe Gwyn's appearance.

"Nope, pretty sure I don't," Lynx replied after Tabitha had described her friend; of course, he left out the fact that he might have met her before, but it probably would have been in a bar, and he probably wouldn't have remembered. He wasn't very social otherwise, unless you counted his polite and brief interactions with the patrons of the bed and breakfast who asked him questions (like where breakfast was or what was a good place to grab dinner).
"Well, she can ask for me at the B&B when you fill her in," Lynx went on, leaning back in his seat and adding, "Make sure you put in a good word for me," with a cheeky sort of grin. He sighed, the grin fading almost wistfully as he thought back to Atkinson's instructions to gather information on the fanatics and stop them when possible; he wondered bitterly how an ESP who had run away form all this shit ended up right smack in the middle of it. He knew that Atkinson did have a fair point; nonmagics would be much quicker to assume all magics were dangerous if the fanatics continued their violence. He wondered what Kenji was doing about it; doubtless the leader of the ESP would be working to stop the fanatics as well, because they would be terrible for business. The Elementals...well, they were sealing their own fate with their seclusion, which was one of the reasons the ESP had turned away from the old rivalry. It was common belief amongst the ESP that the Elementals were dying out and were a trouble of the past, and "past" was nearly a dirt word in the Skyscraper.
"Tabitha, you know he's right, though," Lynx said suddenly, turning to face her. "I mean, if the Elementals don't speak up for themselves, somebody else is going to fill in the blanks, and it might not be with the nicest or truest details."
((Ugh ugh, super crappy post.))
