Character InfoName: Emily Jayne Pembroke, goes by Jayne
Race: Non-magical human
Sex: Female
Age: 26
Faction: None
Power: Can whip up a mean cocktail. Yes, that’s pretty magical.
Rune or code: None
Appearance: Jayne is quite simple looking in the prettiest way possible. She has large, expressive blue eyes and long, fiery red hair. Typical of a natural ginger, her skin is smooth and pale, though she is unusually freckle-less. Perhaps it’s because she wears sunscreen more than she wears clothes. She is of average height and build, and although she keeps her appearance neat and put together, she dresses quite plainly, aiming for comfort and practicality over fashion.
Personality: As a bar owner and keeper, Jayne is a sweet girl and quite friendly, the kind of person who is easy to talk to and never seems to judge; in fact, many people- Elemental, ESP, and non-magic alike- have unloaded their problems on her. Do not make the mistake of assuming she is a push-over, however, for she has quite the volcanic temper typical of red-heads and girls of the South. This used to flare frequently when she was a teen, particularly after the death of her mother, but she has long since mellowed out and nowadays she much prefers to remain easy going.
Jayne has a surprisingly romantic personality of the whimsical variety; she loves to read, and Tom Robbins is her favorite author (redheads and Seattle, he practically wrote directly to her!). She dreams of love and adventure, yet at the same time she keeps a grounded head on her shoulders. She runs a business, after all, and that requires a certain amount of practicality.
Strengths: Jayne is a compassionate, open-minded listener who truly enjoys helping others through their problems. She is loyal, honest, and good hearted, and if you tell her a secret, you can trust her to keep it.
Weaknesses: Although friendly and engaging, Jayne is hesitant about getting close to people, perhaps because she has lost so many people she loves so frequently. She can be honest to a fault, often saying more of the truth than she should, which makes her ill suited for the politics of magic vs magic vs non-magic.
Biography: Jayne has lived a tumultuous life. Born in Alabama to an American mother and a British father, Jayne spent the very early years of her life traveling across the Country to Coho where her mother’s family lived and across the Atlantic to where her father’s family lived. When she was eight, her parents got a divorce, with her father returning to England and her mother remaining in Alabama. Jayne- or Emily, as she still preferred at this point in her life- was devastated by the loss of her father, and she has not seen nor heard from him since he left.
Nevertheless, her mother was a great single mom, loving and dedicated, and she taught her daughter that anything was possible if you put your mind to it. The two were very close and rarely argued, and they took trips every summer to visit Jayne’s grandmother (whom they were very close to) in Coho City. When Jayne was 14, however, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. It was a rough battle, and as her mom got sicker, Jayne spent more time taking care of her than focusing on school. Her grades slipped and she lost touch with many of her friends until, when she was 16, her mom finally succumbed to the disease.
Unsurprisingly, Jayne was devastated. She moved to Mapleport just outside of Coho to live with her grandmother who owned the Stumble Inn. Although she loved her grandmother and she did try helping out around the place as much as possible, it was a very dark time in Jayne’s life (it was at this time she started going by Jayne instead of Emily). It was difficult, if not impossible, for her to make new friends at school, her academics suffered, and she had an incredibly explosive temper that usually blew up at teachers, other students, and (worst of all) her grandmother.
Yet, it was only because of her grandmother that Jayne eventually recovered from the tragedy of her mom’s death. She began helping out at the bar more often, and helping her grandmother and talking with patrons was fundamental in helping her move on. She became quite close with many of the regulars there, and those who frequented the bar often became quite fond of her company.
Although she had lost most of her motivation to achieve much at school, Jayne did manage to graduate, though she chose not to go to college and instead remained with her grandmother to help with the bar. She liked Mapleport and Coho and even the nearby woods where she would sometimes go hiking on the weekends; most of all, however, she loved the bar and had just as much pride in the old pub as her grandmother did. This life suited her, and although she missed her mother almost every day, Jayne was very happy.
When her grandmother died (of natural causes), Jayne inherited the bar and everything that came with it. She was saddened by yet another loss in her life, and for awhile she was quite lonely living in the little apartment above the pub. Yet, she had quite the extended family of regulars to help her get by, and she has happily maintained the Stumble Inn for two years, even adding a full kitchen to the place with the money she inherited from her grandmother so that they could start serving food in addition to beverages.
Nowadays, the Stumble Inn is a successful bar and restaurant. Jayne is a prominent figure in Mapleport, known for her friendly service and good food. Elementals and ESP are both welcome in her bar, though fighting of any kind is strictly prohibited.
Other: Jayne is an active gardener, and much of the veggies served at the Stumble Inn come from her own backyard. Everything else is locally sourced and purchased at farmer’s markets.
Also, Jayne still has a bit of a southern accent. It’s more of a slight lilt than anything, though when she is intoxicated or emotional is becomes more pronounced.
