Character InfoName: Lorelei Collins
Race: Magical human
Sex: Female
Age: 24
Faction: New Magic
Power: Mediumship- Lorelei can speak to and interact with ghosts, though doing so takes a lot of concentration and energy. She must communicate with speech or via sign language, not telepathically. Lorelei has intermediate control over her ability; she trains on her own from time to time but not often enough to be a master. Playing the violin helps her concentrate and, for some reason, attracts ghosts as well. Extended periods of communication will wear her out physically. Oddly enough, she can hear the voices of the dead perfectly, despite her being hard of hearing. Sometimes she can ask them to do something for her, but they rarely comply.
Rune or code: None.
Appearance: Standing at 5'8'', Lorelei is just slightly taller than average, with a lean build and long limbs. She's not exceptionally strong, but can run fast when she needs to. Overall, Lorelei's not a very memorable person in terms of looks. Blonde hair that stops at her shoulders frames her thin face, while dark eyebrows arch over expressive grey eyes. Her face is pale and Lorelei always seems to notice how big her forehead looks, though her sister tells her that's not true.
She dresses to blend in- a thin leather jacket over a patterned shirt, dark jeans, and plain white sneakers are the extent of her wardrobe. Lorelei never was really concerned with fashion and doesn't intend to start anytime soon.
Personality: Headstrong and determined, Lorelei is a force to be reckoned with when she truly wants something. She won't allow anything to stand in her way and may resort to questionable means to accomplish her goals, with little concern for the effects of her actions. In her opinion, the ends justify the means.
Despite this, Lorelei is easily frightened. Being touched, being constrained, helpless situations, all frighten or startle her. Her initial reaction is usually with aggression followed by an attempt to escape. She's tried to overcome these fears before, with little success. Luckily she eventually got over her childhood fear of ghosts.
Though she may come off with a strong personality, Lorelei is pretty friendly if someone takes the time to talk to her. She can read lips so long as the other person is facing her, and occasionally her sister will repeat what has been said if Lorelei didn't catch it the first time. She's an agreeable person and can make friends with a wide variety of people.
Curiosity killed the cat, her father used to warn her, but to this day Lorelei has remained a curious soul. She often goes poking her nose into matters that don't concern her and sneaking around. But it doesn't always have to be intrusive; simply learning new things is enough to satisfy Lorelei.
She's quite caring as well, going out of her way to help children and animals alike in an almost-altruistic way. As a child, she often got in trouble for bringing stray animals home. However, this doesn't mean that Lorelei appreciates being taken advantage of, and if that happens she's liable to abandon that person entirely. After all, she's nice, not blind.
Strengths: Plays violin well, knows sign language, can lip read, taught basic hand to hand combat, can run fast.
Weaknesses: Hard of hearing (can only hear loud noises, like a car horn), ghosts aren’t exactly helpful in fights, easily frightened, hates being touched or constrained, and lacks conviction in fights.
Biography: The Collins family was always a powerful one, with many of its members possessing a strong talent for new magic. Of Lorelei's five siblings, her three older brothers were gifted with the Psionic Blast ability, which ran strong in their bloodline. Unusually, Lorelei herself possessed the ability of Mediumship, which she didn't enjoy as a child. Her identical twin sister, Lily, didn't have any apparent abilities. As such, the twin girls were often ignored in light of their brothers' accomplishments, and they grew close.
When Lorelei began seeing the dead as a young child, she would cover her eyes and it was always Lily that would comfort her until they went away. In their relationship, Lily was her sister, her friend, her protector, whereas Lorelei was the curious, caring, determined one. The duo drifted soon drifted away from the rest of the family.
When they were fifteen, Lily and Lorelei were walking home from the park when a car lost control and skidded onto the sidewalk, slamming into the building. Lorelei managed to escape unscathed, save for a few scratches here and there from the glass and concrete. Lily, whom had yanked her twin out of the way, was not so lucky, and passed away on the scene. Lorelei was devastated.
It was a few weeks later that Lily reappeared, manifested as a ghost. Lorelei was terrified, but quickly calmed when her twin reassured her that she wouldn't be harmed. For the years to come, Lily helped Lorelei overcome her fear of ghosts, and her ability as a medium grew stronger as she talked to her sister. It was also from her sister that Lorelei learned how to play the violin despite not being able to hear it, and how to speak more clearly so that others could understand her (though she still prefers sign language).
In light of more recent events, Lorelei's family (which has always been deeply involved in the conflict between magic users) has pressured her into joining the fight on their respective side. She's reluctant and lacks conviction but does it all the same; after all, they are her family.
